How to leave a Legacy to your Lodge

What a wonderful gift it is to leave a legacy to support those things in life that we loved and cared about. Leaving a legacy to Freemasonry expresses a love for the craft that cannot be expressed in any other way. I urge you to consider leaving a legacy so that others may continue to experience the Brotherhood that is Freemasonry. Help ensure its survival in the future and its growth by your thoughtful gift.

Our regular article “Leaving a Legacy” has prompted the question: How do I Leave a Legacy? (Answer below)

The easiest and most common way to achieve this is through a “bequest” - the property or money that you promise in your will (or trust) to give to another person or organization after you have laid down your working tools.

Sample wording to include Carson Lodge No. 1 or any other organization in your will you may choose:

UNRESTRICTED BEQUEST
(For Carson Lodge's Unrestricted Use)

You may designate your bequest be applied to Carson Lodge’s unrestricted purposes (an “unrestricted bequest”). The funds will give the Lodge flexibility to meet its greatest needs at the time your bequest is realized.

“I give to Carson Lodge No. 1, F & A.M, a Nevada non-profit corporation located in Carson City, Nevada, the
sum of $___________ [or property described herein] [or ____ percent (____%) of the rest of my estate] to be held and applied for the use of Carson Lodge No. 1, F & A.M. for its general purposes.”

RESTRICTED BEQUEST
(For a Purpose You Designate Such as a Scholarship)

You may instead designate a specific purpose for your bequest (a “restricted bequest”). For example, your bequest may be earmarked to fund a scholarship, or support building maintenance or another purpose that advances the programs of Carson Lodge.

“I give to Carson Lodge No. 1, F & A.M, a Nevada non-profit corporation located in Carson City, Nevada, the
sum of $___________ [or property described herein] [or ____ percent (____%) of the rest of my estate] to be
applied for the following purpose:________________ .”

As you review your financial and estate planning we hope you will consider the future of Carson Lodge No. 1 in a plan that meets your philanthropic and financial goals.
